Quick Overview

In 1996, electric cars began to appear on roads all over California. They were quiet and fast, produced no exhaust and ran without gasoline. Yet all these cars of the future were recalled and crushed. This film details why this happened, and pinpoints which groups were responsible.

Product Description

Who Killed The Electric Car is a documentary film about the life and death of the all electric GM EV1. Built to comply with new Californian legislation requiring zero emission vehicles, the EV1 became very popular with a small group of enthusiasts and early adopters. Only ever leased to customers, never sold, the EV1 was eventually withdrawn when legislation was relaxed, and the cars recalled and crushed. The film documents the relaxing of the legislation, and the groups and companies involved in pressuring that decision. Along the way the film shows the great potential for all electric vehicles, not just in reducing CO2 emissions but also massively reducing running costs.

Why It's Good
This DVD is mainly an expose of power and influence in the Californian auto industry. Along the way however it makes compelling arguments for switching to electric vehicles, detailing not just the environmental savings but also the financial savings of abandoning gasoline.
The DVD itself is not particularly green (it's not made from any specially green materials or packaging), but it's power to persuade viewers to switch to electric vehicles means it deserves a place in our store.

How to recycle
Extend the life of the DVD by sharing it around friends and family. The more people you share the DVD with, the fewer people will buy their own copy, whilst still getting the film's message. Store the DVD in it's case and keep out of direct sunlight to prevent scratches and extend the life of the disk. If the disk becomes unusable, recycle it in home craft projects like a homemade CD coaster.
The plastic DVD case can be recycled in municipal plastic recycling facilities.
